Rumble in Exuma

Exuma Residents are risking their lives demanding answers on things that were kept secret for far too long.

One name keeps surfacing!

🇧🇸 WHAT EVERY BAHAMIAN NEEDS TO UNDERSTAND ABOUT BUILDING ON OUR BEACHES

Something serious is happening across our islands, and many people don’t fully understand what the law actually says.

Let’s make it clear.

In The Bahamas, the beach is not fully private property. The moment you reach the wet sand the area where the sea normally touches that land belongs to ALL Bahamians through the government.

That’s called Crown land.

So if you see a structure built where waves are reaching, or right down in the shoreline, that should immediately raise questions.

Because under Bahamian law, you cannot just build in that area without proper approvals, and even then, strict rules apply.

There are also setback rules.

This means buildings must be placed a safe distance away from the shoreline, often many feet inland. This is to protect the land from erosion, storm damage, and to make sure the beach remains for public use.

So when a restaurant, bar, or home is sitting right on the edge of the water, or the sea is literally hitting the structure, something is not right.

Now here’s the part many people don’t realize.

Even if someone says they have a permit, that does not automatically make it legal.

If a permit was given improperly, rushed, or influenced the wrong way, it can be challenged, revoked, and investigated under Bahamian law.

A bad permit does not make a bad build legal.

And beyond the law, there’s the reality.

When you build too close to the sea, you damage the beach itself. You speed up erosion. You take away space that belongs to every Bahamian, and over time, the ocean will take that land back anyway.

It doesn’t matter if it’s a quiet Cay or right in George Town, Exuma.

The same rules apply everywhere.

So the next time you see a building sitting in the waterline, ask yourself:

Was this done the right way?

Or is something being taken that belongs to all of us?

Because once our beaches are gone, we are not getting them back.

Barefoot Nation The Crushing Weight of Duty and VAT in The Bahamas

Barefoot Nation The Crushing Weight of Duty and VAT in The Bahamas

By Anonymous

There was a time when buying a simple pair of shoes did not feel like a financial decision that required strategy sacrifice and second guessing Today in The Bahamas even something as basic as footwear has become a symbol of a deeper economic struggle one driven by layered taxation that continues to squeeze the everyday man and woman

The reality is simple but painful

You see a pair of shoes online for 100 dollars Reasonable Maybe even a good deal But by the time that same pair lands on Bahamian soil it has transformed into something else entirely Customs duty strikes first taking roughly 20 percent Then comes VAT adding another 10 percent not just on the original price but on the total after duty is applied On top of that processing fees quietly attach themselves ensuring that no import escapes without its final squeeze

By the end of it all that 100 dollar pair of shoes is no longer 100 dollars It is 150 dollars Sometimes more

And this is not luxury spending This is not high end fashion This is basic living

Shoes Clothes Household items Essentials

The system is designed in layers tax on top of tax charge on top of charge Each one may seem manageable on its own but together they form a wall that the average Bahamian must climb every single day just to maintain a decent quality of life It is not just about affordability anymore it is about accessibility

For many the question is no longer Do I want this but Can I survive the cost of bringing this in

Small businesses feel it Young entrepreneurs feel it Parents feel it when they are trying to clothe their children for school Workers feel it when they try to present themselves properly for a job The weight of these taxes does not fall on corporations or systems it falls directly on the people

And the most frustrating part is the silence around it

There is no loud acknowledgment of how these stacked taxes are reshaping everyday life No urgency in addressing the growing gap between income and cost of living Instead the system continues as it is quietly tightening its grip

What does the future look like under this weight

If the cost of basic goods continues to rise while wages remain stagnant the outcome is inevitable People will buy less They will stretch what they have longer They will make do repair reuse and eventually go without

Because at some point when even the simplest necessities become too expensive people stop trying to keep up

They step back

They adjust

They go without

And if this trajectory continues unchecked the image of a well dressed striving Bahamian society may slowly fade into something else entirely something more strained more burdened more deprived

Another 5 years in office and we will all be walking the streets barefooted

She Has Fleas in Her Bed But I Still Love Her.

She Has Fleas in Her Bed But I Still Love Her.

By A Young Bahamian Man Just Trying to Hold On to that good ole ghetto love.

I aint even gon lie. I didnt expect love to come like this.

When I came to Andros. I had a picture in my head. Quiet life. Good woman. Peace of mind. Something simple. Something real. And for a moment. I felt like I found that. Her. The way she laugh. The way she check for me. The way she make me feel seen. That aint easy to find nowadays.

But boy. Nobody warn me about the rest.

See loving her aint the problem. Loving her is easy. Its everything around her that testing me.

Her yard filthy. I mean not just needs a lil cleaning. I talking real rough. Things all over. Smell just sitting there like it living too. And the dogs. Lord the dogs. I swear them poor things scratching like they fighting something you cant see. Ticks. Fleas. I see it with my own eyes.

And still. She let them in the bed.

The same bed we supposed to lay down in.

At first I try brush it off. I tell myself maybe I overreacting. Maybe this just how things is out here. But then I start feeling it. Itching. Uncomfortable. Cant even rest my mind proper when I lay down. I talk to her calm respectful trying to explain like baby this aint healthy. This aint right.

She just brush it off.

Say I making a big deal outta nothing. Say them dogs is like family. And I get that. I really do. But where do I stand in all that.

Where do we stand.

Then its the house itself. Man I aint never see nothing like it. Generations stacked on generations. Cousins. Aunties. Uncles. Children. People everywhere. It feel like 150 people living in one space. No privacy. No peace. No place for just us.

I come here looking for love. Not to feel like I squeezing myself into a life that aint got room for me.

And thats where the real pain come in.

Because I love her.

I love her enough to stay. But I starting to wonder if I loving her enough to lose myself.

Now social media get a hold of my story. And it turn into straight war.

The fellas saying.
Bro run. Love aint supposed to come with fleas.
You settling. That aint love thats suffering.
If she cant fix basic hygiene after you talk. She dont respecting you.

And I cant lie. Part of me hear them loud and clear.

But then the women fire back.

If you love her. You help her not shame her.
Everybody aint grow up the same. You supposed to uplift not judge.
You care more about dogs and dirt than her heart.

And that hit different too.

Because they right in a way.

This aint just about dirt or dogs or a crowded house.

Its about two people coming from two different worlds. Trying to meet in the middle and not knowing how.

So now I stuck in between love and reality.

Do I stay and fight for something that feel real. Even if it uncomfortable.

Or do I walk away before resentment grow and destroy what little good we got.

Because right now. Every time I lay down in that bed. Feeling uneasy. Watching her cuddle up like everything normal.

I realizing something hard.

Love alone aint always enough.

And sometimes the smallest things like fleas in a bed. Can turn into the biggest distance between two people who really want to make it work.
