Somebody out there needs to hear this today, so I’m going to say it plain.
You are the last link in a chain that has never, not one single time, been broken.
Think about what that actually means.
Your mother was fed. Your grandmother was fed. Her mother, and hers, and hers — back and back and back, past this island, past the crossing, past the kingdoms in Africa, past the first people to look up at these same stars and give them names. Every one of them. Every single one.
Not one of them was dropped.
Somebody carried each of them when they couldn’t walk. Somebody warmed each of them when the night got cold. Somebody stayed up with each of them through the fever that should have taken them, and gave them water, and did not leave. Through famines. Through sickness. Through storms with no roof and no rescue coming. Through the Middle Passage. Through every hard season this world has ever thrown at people.
Every one of your ancestors was somebody’s child, and every one of them was kept.
That’s not luck. That’s not an accident. That is a relay race hundreds of thousands of years long, run by millions of people who never once fumbled the handoff — and you are the one holding the baton right now.
So on the days you feel like you don’t matter much, understand what you’re saying. You’re standing at the end of the longest unbroken act of love in human history. You are what all that carrying was for. You are the reason they didn’t give up.
And here’s the part I want to sit on your chest a little.
You’re not just the end of that chain. You’re the middle of it.
Somebody who has not been born yet is going to exist because you got up today. Somebody two hundred years from now, who will never know your name, is going to laugh a laugh that came from you. You are the answered prayer of people long gone, and you are the prayer being prayed right now by people who don’t exist yet.
You are a walking prayer, my brother. My sister. You always were.
So eat something. Drink some water. Call somebody who love you. Put your feet on the ground tomorrow and go again.
The chain didn’t break for eighty thousand years.
Don’t you dare drop it now.
