The Dead Ain’t Always Dead
People always ask me How can you do that job?
Don’t you get scared?
And for years, I kept my mouth shut, because some things to dark for people to handle. Some things ain’t meant to be spoken about in the daylight. But after reading that post last night on Bahama Drama about the child demon spirit I feel like it’s time.
See I’m a freelance mortician. I work all through the Bahamas even in America. I’ve embalmed more bodies than I can count. And let me tell you something the dead ain’t always dead.
There have been times when, right in the middle of prepping a body eyes snap open Lips move. They don’t always scream but they always ask the same thing
Where am I?
What happened?
How did I die?
Sometimes I answer. Sometimes I don’t. Because the truth ain’t for everybody. And some of them, they already know. They just don’t want to believe it.
But theres one that still haunts me. An old woman. She was nothing special at first. Just another body. But when I made that first incision she sat up. Eyes wide open black as night. And in a voice that wasn’t hers that wasn’t human she said
If you touch me again, I will snatch your soul and eat it in hell.
Now, I’ve had them talk before. I’ve had them move. I’ve even been grabbed yanked so hard I hit the wall. But she was different. Something about her presence made the whole room wrong Cold Stinking. I swear for a moment I wasn’t in that embalming room no more I was somewhere else.
I don’t know what made me do it but I grabbed my Bible flipped to Psalm 91 and started reading. My hands were shaking so bad I could barely hold the page still. And as the words came out my mouth she shrieked. Not like a person. Not like anything from this world.
She fell back onto the table stiff as a board Silent.
But her mouth her mouth was still moving. Whispering.
And when I leaned in close, just before I closed her lips I heard her say
This ain’t over you black Jew bitch
That was years ago, but I still pray Psalm 91 over every body I embalm. Because I know the truth now. Death is just a door. And some of them some of them don’t leave easy.
And some of them they don’t leave at all. Get y’all souls right with Jesus Christ Bahamian.
