The Regret of a Broken Woman
The Regret of a Broken Woman
Good afternoon, Bahama Drama. Keep me anonymous, cause dis story ain’t easy to share. But I feel like I gotta get it off my chest, ‘cause maybe someone out dere can learn from it before it too late.
I was married to a good man, Ray. Ray wasn’t da kinda man who bark loud or beat his chest like some men do. He was quiet, gentle, and kind. But lemme tell you, I ain’t appreciate none of it. In fact, I used to make his life a living hell. Whenever his friends come over to watch da game or hang out, I would go outta my way to embarrass him. I’d make snide remarks in front of dem, say tings like, “Ray can’t even fix a lightbulb without messin’ up,” or, “Y’all lucky y’all have strong men to help around da house, cause Ray useless.” I’d laugh in his face while his friends dere, but deep down, I knew I was cuttin’ him deep. He’d just sit dere quiet, smile it off, but I could see da hurt in his eyes.
And it ain’t stop dere. When Ray get sick wit cancer, some of his friends would come by to check on him, see how he doin’. But instead of feelin’ grateful, I was out dere runnin’ behind some of dem same friends. Yes, I cheated on Ray, more than once. Even while he was layin’ in dat hospital bed, fightin’ for his life, I was out creepin’. One of his closest friends even tried to come see him, and I ain’t let him in, cause just da night before, I was wit dat same man. I know it was wrong, but at da time, I ain’t care. Ray was weak, and I was selfish. I wanted more, and I ain’t care who I hurt to get it.
When Ray died, I felt numb at first. But then, da guilt start hittin’ me. I look back and realize how evil I was. How many times I tear him down, make him feel less than a man, even when he was tryin’ his best. Ray deserved better, and I know now dat I was da one who ain’t deserve him.
After Ray died, I meet Marvin. At first, Marvin seem like everything I thought I wanted—strong, confident, a real “man’s man,” you know? But soon as I get in deep wit him, his true self come out. Marvin? He’s a monster. He beat me almost every day now. Sometimes he slap me, sometimes he punch me, and sometimes he just drag me across da floor if he vex enough.
But da worst part? He don’t even care to hide his cheatin’. He’ll sit right dere next to me in bed, textin’ other women, laughin’ and smilin’, while I lay dere pretendin’ I sleep. I too scared to confront him, cause I know if I say one word, it only ga lead to another beatin’. I sit dere quiet, holdin’ in da tears, scared to even breathe too loud. Sometimes I wonder how I end up here. I never thought I’d be da one gettin’ beat and cheated on, but now I see, dis my punishment for how I treat Ray.
I deserve every slap, every punch, every bit of pain Marvin put on me. It’s like karma came back to bite me hard. Ray never put his hands on me, even when I gave him every reason to. And now I here, takin’ licks from a man who don’t even care if I live or die.
I wish I could go back and change tings, treat Ray like da king he was, but it too late now. I just gotta live wit dis regret and hope someone out dere learn from my mistakes. Don’t wait till it’s too late to appreciate da good man in ya life. Cause once dey gone, all you left wit is pain and guilt—and trust me, dat’s a burden you don’t want to carry.
