The Bahamas school system curriculum is causing disinterest in education among 96% of students internationally for years
Good afternoon. I would like to remain anonymous.
I am a current student in The Bahamas. For the entire school year I have felt abandoned, to deal with the hardships of school by myself. Even as a principal’s list student, the struggles of this year has been immense almost unbearable. For the example, I’ve had days when I’d be woken up at 2 to 4 o’clock in the morning to the sound of my Gmail notifying me that a teacher just assigned more work. I’ve also had teachers assign over six different pieces of homework each, work that had to be turned in before 3:00pm. Which would be obviously impossible, if you take in to account that we had a full 9am-3pm day of school.
Speaking of school hours, they are no longer taken into consideration. To the eyes of teachers, the margins between when school starts and ends are non-existing. As can be seen from what I said earlier. Some days I stay up for a full 24 hours doing work. Sometimes so physically and mentally exhausted that I can’t get up for school in the mornings. Despite the tight deadlines, work is marked at an incredibly slow pace. Leaving students in the blind as to what our grades are. Only to bombard us with the discouraging news that we do not have enough work in, and will fail the semester. Students are now being forced to redo assignments that span all the way from December 2020 to now. We are supposed to be reviewing and studying for upcoming exams and BGCSE’s and all I am being addressed with is more work. In terms of the organization of my school, it is comparable to a pig sty.
Knowledgeable to the harsh treatment students are undergoing, an array of lies are being fed to our parents during P.T.A. meetings. During a face to face day we were shoulder to shoulder on a basketball court in the sun, awaiting news that could have been delivered over the microphone. Every virtual day, we have to run around asking for the virtual link to attend our classes. Meaning, if we don’t find the link in time, we will either be marked absent or late, which will show up on our report cards giving the impression of us not caring. To add to the stress, some teachers are not cooperating with each other, which results in classes being held at the same time. We are often forced to choose which class we will attend. And in the words of some teachers “Absence signifies the want for 0’s”. A teacher made a mistake on one of my assignments and gave me a 0%. After bringing the situation to her attention she said she would correct it. That was 10 days ago. Today i asked if she had made the correction and she responded with “No” as if she didn’t care. I am beyond frightened to the thought of what my report card is going to look like, because I am a responsible person forced to work with inconsiderate and incompetent teachers.
“I know this is a trying time”, the line that was heard before we were forced to buy a book despite the current hard times. I cannot speak for everyone, but from my perspective I was not able to afford the work book. Many students and I offered to complete the work on folder-sheet until we were able to afford it. However, that idea was quickly shot down. We were told yesterday most of us had either D’s or F’s in the class. I reached out to one of these teachers, but was ignored. This is the most tiresome school year I have ever encountered. But it seems the work is only going to get harder, since the Minister of Education implemented new graduation qualifications.
I hope the belief that students do “nothing” in schools can be forgotten. We are in an age of advanced Physics, bio-chemistry, and extremely complicated mathematics. If the work loads and stress we endure from our classes today were around back in your days, half of you would not be able to present a high school diploma at all. All i ask is that you put yourself in our shoes, which is something our teachers and some of our parents failed to do.

We agree. Our education system is outdated and is a natural deterrent for becoming educated. Who knows that might be it’s intention.
