FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

The recent press release issued by the Grand Bahama Power Company (GBPC) is a welcome, albeit insufficient, first step in addressing the widespread frustration and disruption caused by their recent actions. While we appreciate the acknowledgment of the inconvenience and the stated pause on disconnections, the underlying issues of unreliable service, poor communication, and exorbitant rates remain unaddressed and continue to plague Grand Bahamians
The statement’s focus on improper disconnections fails to recognize the root cause of this discontent: the high cost of electricity and a power supply that is anything but reliable. Consumers are faced with bills that are a heavy burden on their finances, all while enduring frequent and often lengthy power outages that disrupt daily life and business operations. This is not the reliable service Grand Bahamians have come to expect.
We, the consumers of Grand Bahama, demand more than a temporary pause on disconnections. We are calling for a more substantial commitment from GBPC to address these systemic issues. Therefore, we propose the following:
An Extended Moratorium on Disconnections: To provide a true measure of relief and demonstrate a genuine commitment to working with the community, we urge GBPC to cease all disconnections for the remainder of the month. This would give residents and businesses who are struggling to keep up with the high cost of electricity a much-needed reprieve and the time to work with the company on sustainable payment solutions.

A Concrete Plan to Lower Rates: The core issue of high electricity costs must be addressed. We urge GBPC to immediately present a transparent plan outlining how they will reduce their rates per kilowatt-hour. This plan should include measures to improve efficiency, reduce operational costs, and explore more affordable and sustainable energy sources. The burden of high fuel costs cannot continue to be passed on to consumers who are already struggling.

A Return to Reliable Service: Grand Bahamians have a right to a stable and reliable power supply. The frequent outages are unacceptable and are a detriment to the island’s economic and social well-being. We demand a clear and detailed plan for infrastructure improvement and maintenance to ensure that the power grid is capable of meeting the needs of the island without disruption.

This press release from GBPC is a small gesture, but it does not go far enough. It is time for action, not just words. We urge the Grand Bahama Power Company to listen to the voices of their consumers and to make a genuine commitment to providing affordable, reliable power and the level of service that Grand Bahamians deserve.
