SHE COME HOME SMELLIN LIKE OLD SEGGERETS & RUM and CUM
Dear Bahama Drama
I hope you read this with the same weight my heart carrying right now, because I don’t know who else to talk to and I tired pretending like everything sweet when deep down inside I breaking up, piece by piece.
My name ain’t important, but I’m a 44 year old, hard working Abaco man. I work construction from sun up till late in the evening mixing concrete lifting blocks and building homes I can’t even afford. I ain’t no saint, but I honest loyal and every dollar I make goes right back into my home.
Now my issue is this I love my wife, but I starting to feel like she don’t love me back the same way anymore. These past few months, something been off. She leave home in the morning saying she going to check her cousin or look for work and by nightfall, she still ain’t home. And when she finally stagger through the door? She smellin like old cigarettes and white rum, hair all messy, laughing like she still at the party, and giving me one lazy, half sober kiss on the cheek like nothing wrong.
Drama, this ain’t the woman I marry. We been together seven years. When we started out, she was sweet, respectful, cooked dinner, and talked about opening her own nail salon one day. I helped her get her license, even bought her a starter kit. Now the only thing she polishing is the rum bottle.
I try talk to her. I tell her I worried. I ask her where she been and why she acting so cold. And you know what she tell me? You always nagging! You want a wife or a warden? Drama, I ain’t trying to control nobody. I just want to feel like I got a partner, not a stranger who only come home when the bar lock up.
Our bed cold most nights. She roll over, turn her back to me, and fall asleep smelling like Bambu and Bacardi. I ain’t even feel like a man no more. I wash my own clothes, cook my own food some days, and get silence or sarcasm when I just trying to make things right.
People in town already whispering. You know how small island go everybody business is community news. They say they see her with one fella who drive taxi boat. I don’t want to believe it, but too much things lining up now. She dressing different. Always on her phone, smiling and giggling like she texting her first love.
But Drama, here’s the part that break me I still love her. I still see the woman I marry somewhere in that mess.
But I don’t know how much longer I can hold on. I ain’t want to walk away, but I can’t keep drowning either.
So I’m asking you, Bahama Drama
Is she lost to the street?
Do I fight for her, or do I finally fight for my own peace?
Because I tired living like a stranger in my own house, and I scared that by the time she sober up, I might already be gone in every way but body.
Please, guide me. I don’t want to lose her, but I can’t keep losing myself either.
