Praying for China

From the Shores of Exuma to the Cities of China: Sending Our Thoughts and Prayers
When you live on an island, you know exactly what a storm looks like. You know the sound of the wind picking up, the tense feeling of waiting for landfall, and the long, tough road to cleaning up afterward. So when we look across the ocean and see what our friends in China are going through right now with Typhoon Bavi, it hits incredibly close to home.

Typhoon Bavi just smashed into mainland China’s eastern coast as the strongest July storm to hit Zhejiang Province in over 70 years. The storm struck with devastating fury, packing ferocious landfall winds of roughly 90 to 101 mph. Before losing steam, it churned up catastrophic coastal storm surges and tore down trees and infrastructure across the eastern seaboard.

The sheer size of this monster is staggering. Even as Bavi was downgraded to a severe tropical storm while pushing inland, its massive, moisture-heavy rain bands have spread an immense blanket of extreme weather across the country.

The current reported impacts on the ground are immense. Major coastal cities like Wenzhou have seen entire streets completely submerged under floodwaters. As the storm tracks north, cities like Shenyang have been forced to issue red flood alerts and raise emergency responses to the highest levels. Rivers are overflowing, metro stations are closing, and major northern provinces like Liaoning and Jilin have ground to a halt, suspending schools, transport, and businesses.

The scale of the humanitarian effort is historic, with nearly 2 million people evacuated in Zhejiang alone, and hundreds of thousands more fleeing their homes across Liaoning, Beijing, and Shanghai to escape flash floods and landslides.

Here in the Bahamas, we are no strangers to the power of nature, and we know that behind every statistic is a family trying to keep safe, a business owner worrying about their livelihood, and communities pulling together to survive.
To everyone affected by the storm, emergency responders working around the clock, and families displaced by the rising waters, our deepest thoughts, prayers, and island solidarity are with you.

Stay strong, China. The world is watching, and we are sending nothing but love and resilience your way.

No island is an island when it comes to standing together through a storm.
