Our country in trouble 😵‍💫

Our country in trouble 😵‍💫

There is talk floating around that bringing in 300 foreign teachers is going to turn our education system around and fix our national D average. Not a chance in hell—at least not anytime soon. Maybe in 20 or 30 years, but certainly not today. Importing teachers is a quick fix to lower student-to-teacher ratios; it is not the magic solution to the deep-rooted issues facing The Bahamas.

The teacher shortage is merely a symptom, not the root cause, of our academic decline. We have a D average because the core values, morals, and social fabric of our nation have unravelled.

When we have grandmothers in their late 30s and early 40s, it tells us everything we need to know: children are raising children. When youth lack guidance, wisdom vanishes from the household. It starts at home, where far too many single parents are forced to work multiple jobs just to put food on the table, leaving children to raise themselves.

That lack of discipline and home structure inevitably spills into the classroom. We expect our schools to perform miracles, but teachers can only do so much when the foundation laid at home is broken.

The final stop for this growing social disorder is the workplace. The alarming decline in discipline, respect for authority, and basic workplace ethics isn’t starting on the job—it’s finishing there. The destructive behaviors nurtured in chaotic homes and carried through our school halls simply follow these young adults straight into the workforce.

Until we as a society are brave enough to address the breakdown of the Bahamian family structure, no number of imported teachers will raise our grades. Filling seats at the front of a classroom won’t heal what is broken inside our homes.
