Never show favorites amongst your kids
The verse you are looking for is Genesis 37:3.
In the Torah, this is the moment that triggers the intense jealousy of Joseph’s brothers, ultimately setting off the chain of events, his sale into slavery, his rise in Egypt, and the eventual relocation and enslavement of the Israelites.
Here is the exact verse from the Torah:
“Now Israel loved Joseph more than all his children, because he was the son of his old age; and he made him a coat of many colors [ketonet passim].”
The Talmud’s Commentary on the Jacket
While the Torah gives the narrative, the Talmud (Tractate Shabbat 10b) directly connects this specific jacket to the ultimate exile and slavery of Israel in Egypt, warning against showing favoritism among children:
“A person should never distinguish one of his sons from among his other sons, for because of the weight of two sela’im of fine wool that Jacob gave to Joseph more than his other sons [for the colorful jacket], his brothers became jealous of him, and the matter rolled on until our ancestors descended to Egypt.”
