I’ve learned to think like a duck

Good afternoon Bahama Drama please keep me anonymous. I live on one of the island’s of Exuma. A place of tranquility & peace. Truly it’s a multitude of island’s where God’s spirit is always present.

Being a woman from Nassau I was delighted to come here and finally find peace and harmony throughout this settlement as I decided to settle in. I found a job in the town which I’m not afraid to admit really didn’t pay as much as I was use to earning but it kept me afloat for a while here.

A few months later I got word that Sandals on the main island was hiring so I went there and applied and got the job.

I worked long and hard for many months and later decided to quit the day that I wisdom was given to me by the ducks that lived in their ponds.

One afternoon after leaving work I decided to rest myself by one of their ponds deciding the way forward should I go back to Nassau or stay in Exuma working hard continuing what they call this rat race.

And believe it or not I started feeling all sad for myself and my struggle as I really didn’t have nobody family or friends here to air out my problems to.

So as the ducks in the pond started to come closer to me as maybe they thought that I had food or something I started to tell all of my problems to them as not they where close enough to me and surly could hear me.

As I was talking to them about everything one of the smaller of the ducks I think it was just a baby maybe a few weeks old said to me so clearly in English that her Mommy makes her swim everyday and she doesn’t even like the water.

I swear that’s what she said to me and instantly the mother who was much closer to me said to her as she looked back at her

what did I tell you about talking to humans! I was like what the Hell.

In surprise I said Mrs she was only trying to make me feel better.

The Mommy duck then asked me what was the matter. I told her that I was really tired as a Bahamian of struggling no matter where I went in my country and that I felt like this would be something that I’d have to do for my entire life.

The mother duck then asked me what it was that I wanted to do with my life.

I told her that when I was younger that I wanted to be a nurse when I grew up. She asked me what was a nurse and I told her that it was a woman that helped people who are sick.

She then told me the story about the frog and mosquitoe a story that I had never heard before.

She said that her mother told her that before humans where around on earth that frogs and mosquitoes always complained to the other animals about how hard they had to work just to make a living and eat.

She said that all of the other animals use to talk bad about the frog’s all of the time saying how lazy they were and how they always just up and left they kid’s after they were born in the world without regrets or consideration for the other aquatic animals that shared the water.

She said that the mosquitoes would complain to the other insect’s about how unruly tadpoles where to their children and would even murder them as food.

She then said that they all of a sudden stopped all of the complaining when humans came along because the frog’s now had to find a place to live away from humans that was safe and the mosquitoes had more food than they could have ever dreamed of on the island.

I then asked her if she could adopt me as one of her own and teach me how to become as wise as her and maybe even become a duck just like her.

Her answer was she doesn’t know me like that and I might be on some kinda drugs. I assured her that I didn’t do drugs nor was I on any kinda drugs.

She then asked me how is it then that we can fully understand each other?

All I could say to myself was, AIN’T THAT SOME SHIT?
