HE WAS KIDNAPPED AS A CHILD…
HE WAS KIDNAPPED AS A CHILD…
THE KIDNAPPER TOLD HIM TO STOP SINGING.
HE KEPT PRAISING GOD.
In 2014, a young boy named Willie Myrick was taken from outside his home in Atlanta, Georgia, and forced into a stranger’s vehicle.
He was only a child.
Imagine being taken away from everything you know and placed inside a car with a stranger.
But Willie did something that the kidnapper apparently never expected.
He started singing.
He sang Every Praise, the gospel song made famous by Hezekiah Walker.
He kept singing.
And he kept singing.
The kidnapper reportedly became angry and told Willie to stop.
But the boy continued praising God.
He did not stop.
He kept singing the same words over and over again.
Every praise is to our God.
Every word of worship with one accord.
Every praise, every praise is to our God.
The situation continued for hours.
Then something happened.
The kidnapper opened the vehicle door and put Willie out.
The boy was left unharmed.
He was free.
A child who had been taken from his home was suddenly standing outside that vehicle and able to get back to safety.
Willie later shared his story publicly, and it became an extraordinary testimony of faith, courage and survival.
Some people will hear this story and see it simply as a terrifying kidnapping that ended with a child being released.
Others will see something deeper in what happened.
A young boy was afraid, but he chose to praise God anyway.
He could not control the vehicle.
He could not control the kidnapper.
But he could control what came out of his mouth.
And he kept praising.
THE POWER OF PRAISE
The Bible says in Psalm 18:2:
“The LORD is my rock, my fortress, and my savior; my God is my rock, in whom I find protection. He is my shield, the power that saves me, and my place of safety.”
Willie Myrick’s story has stayed with people for years because it reminds us that courage can sometimes come from the smallest voice.
A child.
A song.
A prayer.
A belief that God is still present even when you are afraid.
We may never know exactly what was happening inside that vehicle or what ultimately caused the kidnapper to release him.
But Willie kept singing.
And he made it home.
Sometimes your praise is the only thing you feel you have left.
So praise anyway…
