The Rock That Refused to Break
Y’all ain’t ready for this one right here.
This ain’t the quiet little name you think it is.
This is BAHAMIAN Harding, the one that survived salt, slavery, and every storm.
This is the story of Harding Surname!
The Roots: “Son of the Hard One”
Old English: Hærdaing → “descendant of the hardy/brave one.”
By the 1700s, Harding was already a Loyalist war cry. When the British lost the American Revolution, thousands of diehard Tories packed up and sailed south.
The Hardings came with them, tough as the limestone they landed on.
First stop: Harbour Island, then Eleuthera, Cat Island, Long Island, and Exuma.
They brought cotton seed, muskets, and chains.
One of the earliest: Thomas Harding of Harbour Island (1785) arrived with 73 enslaved Africans and turned Dunmore Town into a mini Charleston.
Another: William Harding of Rock Sound owned half of central Eleuthera and sat in the House of Assembly like he was born to it.
⛓️ The Chains & The Choice
When emancipation hit in 1838, the registrar on every island wrote the same thing over and over,
“Formerly property of Harding, now chooses the name Harding.”
They didn’t run from the name.
They claimed it.

UNBREAKABLE.

🪶 The Legacy
From the white Loyalist who thought he owned the rock…
…to the enslaved woman who birthed ten children on that same rock and named them all Harding…
…to the boy from Mortimer’s, Long Island who grew up in a house with no doors and now signs laws in the capital…
Harding don’t just mean “brave one” anymore.
In these islands it means:
You can chain the body, burn the crops, sink the boat, but you can’t sink a Harding.
Because in the Bahamas, Harding ain’t a surname.
It’s a survival manual.
