HAITI SCHEDULES FIRST PRESIDENTIAL ELECTION IN A DECADE

PORT-AU-PRINCE, Haiti — Haiti has officially set the dates for its first presidential and legislative elections in a decade, marking a significant step toward restoring democratic governance after years of political instability. The Provisional Electoral Council announced that the first round of voting is scheduled for December 13, 2026, with runoff elections planned for February 21, 2027. Final certified results are expected by March 7, 2027. The electoral calendar also includes constitutional referendum and local elections. Officials cautioned that the timeline remains dependent on security conditions and the availability of funding as armed gangs continue to control parts of the country. Voter registration is already underway in most departments, while election authorities continue preparations in hopes of returning Haiti to constitutional, elected government.
