A QUESTIONABLE PROPHET……One morning last week, I went to Potter’s Cay Dock to buy breakfast from one of my favorite food trucks. As I was walking toward my car with my order of grits and tuna in hand, an elderly gentleman briskly approached me.

“Ma’am, sorry to disturb you. Could you please give me a few dollars to buy something to eat.”

I gave the soliciting gentleman an examining glance. I don’t give my money away just for the asking. He appeared to be well into his seventies, well groomed and had a serious demeanour about him. He looked nothing like the average beggar hanging around Potter’s Cay Dock. I offered him $5. That was enough to cover breakfast from the food truck.

“My name is Prophet X,” said the gentleman, giving me a few details about himself. He was 83 years old. He was originally from The Bahamas but has been living in the United States for years. He had come to Nassau on a divine mission to preach.

“83 years old! You look fantastic”. This was no idle compliment. The prophet’s back was ramrod straight and his aged face showed few wrinkles. His voice was robust and his comportment evinced great confidence. He was the same age as my mother, and he bore some resemblance to my beloved deceased grandfather.

“Prophet X, with all due respect, I am puzzled.”

“Why is that, Ma’am?”

“If God sent you on a mission, He wouldn’t expect you to go around begging people. He would provide for you.”

“Ma’am, I don’t see it that way. The Bible says, ‘ask and it shall be given to you, knock and the door shall be opened to you.’”

“But, Prophet, in the Psalms, David said, ‘I’ve been young and now am old and I have never seen the righteous forsaken or his seed begging bread.’”

Surely, I thought to myself, David’s declaration would stop all opposing argument from the Prophet.

“Sis, do you remember the Prophet Elijah and how he asked the widow of Zarephath to make a loaf of bread from the little oil and flour she had? Now, this lady had barely enough for her and her son to live on, yet, the prophet asked her to share the little she had with him. She did, and she received a mighty miracle.”

“What a convincing comeback!” I thought. Yet to my mind, a prophet begging random strangers is out of sync with a man of God should look like.

I suggested to the Prophet that he could buy breakfast from the food truck I got my tuna and grits from.

“No, no, I’m going to use this money toward buying a nice lunch at the Mall at Marathon. I believe some other folk will bless me today, and I’ll have enough to buy lunch.”

Awww, this elderly gentleman is the same age as my mom. It wouldn’t deprive me much to pay for his lunch. Moreover, that would be my good deed for the day.

I invited the Prophet into my car and offered to drive him to the Mall at Marathon. On the way, we chatted freely. He shared with me that He receives assignments from God to take the word to different communities. The last time he came to The Bahamas, he visited Abaco. That was just before Hurricane Dorian. “In spite of what happened in Abaco, the people of The Bahamas haven’t changed,” he said, “They are still following other gods.”

“So, you have no family here in Nassau who could help you?”

“No, I don’t have any more relatives in Nassau. Most of them died or moved away to the States. I have two children and they both live in the States.”

“So, how do you manage? Where do you sleep?”

“Ma’am, throughout the day, so many people bless me. By the end of the day, sometimes I have over $200. I’ll rent a room. I am able to take a bath every day and change my clothes. You don’t smell me, ey?”

“No, no, you are very well groomed.”

Changing subject, the prophet began to make some revelations to me:

“Sis, God called you at the age of 12 to be a teacher of righteousness. God loves you with an incredible love. But He wants you to come up higher. The hand of the devil has been hard against you, but by God’s grace, I see that you have prevailed. There is an angel that watches over you in your room. His wings touch the ceiling. “ And in this manner, the prophet shared quite a few details with me, all of which I found very encouraging and comforting.

I am a natural skeptic. All of what this self- proclaimed prophet said to me is in the Bible for all to read. In chapter after chapter, the Bible speaks about the immense love of God for each of us. The Bible also tells us that the devil is a roaring lion seeking souls to devour. And the Psalms tell us that the Angel of the Lord encamps about the righteous. So, the Prophet revealed no new truth to me. His mention of my being called at the age of 12 to be a teacher of righteousness did catch me by surprise. It was at the age of 12 that I accepted Jesus as my Lord and Saviour. Strangely enough, another person who called himself a prophet told me that I was called to be a teacher of truth. Perhaps I have missed the mark. May the Lord have mercy on me.

Soon, we were pulling up to the Mall at Marathon. We said our goodbyes. The Prophet headed to Sbarro’s, and I drove around to the other side of the mall to pay a bill.

Over the past few days, I have thought often of the Prophet. His method of fundraising troubles me deeply. I have thought about how Jesus raised funds for his missions. Jesus was an itinerant preacher. He had a core group of patrons who provided financial support for his mission. Jesus did not go about the street begging passersby.

We live in challenging financial times. A lot of people are struggling, hurting. Vulnerable people hungry for a personal word from a prophet are easy prey to be ripped off. God alone is the True Judge. Is the self-proclaimed prophet I encountered last week a genuine man of God or a garden variety shyster?

Page reply:

Bahama Drama to is a prophet of the most high God of world’s, but a lot of things that God tells me I don’t repeat to people, because wisdom tell’s me that the word of God cannot fit all and is not for all. And only those who were called by God from the beginning will understand what I mean. May God grant you understanding & LOVE…
