Cheap Gifts from the Dragon
Why the Bahamas Must Choose True Friends Over Fleeting Glitter
By Bahama Drama Staff
Nassau, Bahamas – Picture this: a grand stadium, touted as a symbol of international friendship, now crumbling under the weight of its own shoddy construction. The Thomas A. Robinson National Stadium, a “gift” from the People’s Republic of China built in 2012, was meant to be the crown jewel of Bahamian sports. Instead, it’s become an eyesore and a safety hazard, with chunks of concrete spalling off walls and the structural steel roof truss corroding like rust in a tropical storm. Just last year, urgent repairs forced the cancellation of major events, including the beloved HomeTown Heroes Basketball Classic, leaving fans and athletes scrambling for alternatives. Social media buzzes with frustration, posts lamenting how “if we don’t want it to end up like this in the future, we should avoid Chinese materials and labour this time around.” And now, a whopping $36 million renovation—again footed by China, is underway, set to wrap just in time for the World Relays in 2024. But why pour good money after bad? This isn’t friendship; it’s a half-baked promise wrapped in red tape.
Bahamians, we’ve seen this pattern before. China’s gifts sparkle under the spotlight, stadiums, promises of hospitals, but they fade fast, leaving us with repair bills and regret. Imagine hosting a track meet or a football final in a venue where the roof could cave in at any gust of wind. It’s not just an eyesore; it’s downright dangerous. Piece by piece, since its unveiling over a decade ago, the stadium has shed its facade: leaking roofs during rains, uneven seating that sways under crowds, and visible cracks snaking through once-proud facades. Local contractors whisper about subpar materials, cheap steel that rusts in our salty air, concrete mixed without the right reinforcements. It’s a metaphor for too many “gifts” from the East: alluring at first glance, but built to crumble.
Contrast that with the enduring legacies from our true kin across the pond and up north. The British, our colonial forebears, left us fortresses of stone and timber that have withstood hurricanes, wars, and time itself. Take Fort Charlotte, the largest of Nassau’s 18th-century British-built forts, perched defiantly on the waterfront since 1787, its massive walls and cannons still standing tall, a testament to craftsmanship that laughs at the elements. Or the Balcony House, the oldest wooden structure in Nassau, dating back to the Loyalist era of the late 1700s, its balcony overlooking the harbor as sturdy today as when British settlers first raised a toast there. These aren’t flimsy facades; they’re family heirlooms, built with care and meant to last generations. No major overhauls, no emergency shutdowns, just quiet strength, sheltering our history and our people through storms literal and figurative.
And let’s not forget our American cousins, whose gifts pulse with the same resilient spirit. In 2010, the American Bridge Company poured $31.3 million into constructing the Arawak Cay Cruise Port in Nassau, a gleaming gateway that’s handled millions of visitors without a hitch, its piers and facilities as solid today as the day they opened. When Hurricane Dorian ravaged Abaco and Grand Bahama in 2019, the U.S. didn’t just send checks; they airlifted 47 metric tons of supplies and followed up with $3.6 million in modular shelters, rescue boats, and construction materials that helped rebuild homes and clinics to withstand future fury. Their high-speed SAFE boats, donated to the Royal Bahamas Defence Force in 2021, patrol our waters still, cutting through waves with American-engineered grit, no rust, no breakdowns, just reliable muscle keeping our islands safe. These aren’t cheap trinkets; they’re investments in our sovereignty, our safety, our future.
Bahamians, let’s pull back the curtain on what these gifts really say about our “friends.” As Jesus taught in the Sermon on the Mount, “If you then, being evil, know how to give good gifts to your children, how much more will your Father in heaven give good things to those who ask Him?” (Matthew 7:11). It’s a divine benchmark: true givers build with love, longevity, and integrity. Britain and America? They’ve given us forts that guard our past and ports that fuel our present, good gifts from earthly fathers who know how to care. China? Their stadium sags like a poorly tied knot, a “gift” that burdens more than it blesses. And whispers of a “cheap hospital” next? Lord have mercy, we can already see the leaks forming.
But it runs deeper than bricks and mortar. This is about souls and values. The Bahamas is a Christian nation, our churches the heartbeat of every island, our faith the anchor in every storm. America, for all her flaws, shares that bedrock: freedom to worship, Bibles in every hand, values of liberty and charity woven into her flag. We’re cousins in Christ, bound by a shared love of the Good Book and the good fight for justice.
China? Their national symbol is a dragon, a biblical beast of deception and fire. And their treatment of the faith we hold dear? An abomination. The Chinese Communist Party doesn’t just outlaw uncensored Bibles; they have gone so far as to rewrite the Scriptures to fit their ideology. Look at the proof:
The Woman Caught in Adultery (John 8:3–11)
The Holy Bible (KJV): Jesus said, “He that is without sin among you, let him first cast a stone at her.” One by one, the accusers left, and Jesus declared, “Neither do I condemn thee: go, and sin no more.”
CCP-Approved Textbook (2018): When the crowd departed, Jesus Himself stones the woman to death, declaring, “I too am a sinner.”
➡️ This blasphemous twist paints our sinless Savior as a sinner, something no Christian can accept.
The Ten Commandments in Churches
The Holy Bible (Exodus 20:3): “Thou shalt have no other gods before Me.”
CCP Replacement: Posters of the Commandments are removed and replaced with quotes from Xi Jinping, such as: “Resolutely guard against the infiltration of Western ideology.”
➡️ They erased God’s voice and replaced it with a politician’s.
Revelation 22:19 warns: “If anyone takes away from the words of the book of this prophecy, God will take away his share in the tree of life.” China has taken away, twisted, and replaced. If they cannot be trusted with the eternal Word of God, how can they be trusted with stadiums, hospitals, or partnerships?
This dragon on our doorstep is no friend. Their gifts are traps, their words are lies, their foundations are cracked. American values, faith, freedom, fortitude, align with our Bahamian soul like conch to fritters. Their gifts endure because their friendship is real. Britain’s stone sentinels remind us of roots that run deep. Together, they are our family. China is not.
Bahamians, let us be clear: for our safety, our faith, and our future, it is better to keep the dragon at a distance. Their cheap gifts are not worth the price. Let us choose friends who give good gifts, just as our Father above gives perfect ones.
Bahama Drama calls on our leaders: Audit those Chinese “gifts.” Protect our Christian heritage. Keep the dragon’s claws off Bahamian soil. Our islands deserve no less.

They real question is, how many are there and how long have they been operating in the Bahamas without the public’s knowledge?
