I have always been a superhero.

I have always been a superhero.

Bahama Drama.

Sitting here in this beach chair on the shoreline of Exuma might appear easy, but it is not.

I have always been a superhero, though only in my own mind. I do not often share my personal life, as I have been through a great deal over the years due to the actions of powerful enemies. They have used their extensive connections to undermine me on the streets and, subsequently, their Chamber of Commerce networks to destroy my opportunities in the job market. This is what is known as organized crime, if you are unfamiliar with the term.

Despite these challenges, Bahama Drama has remained a superhero.

My powers are many, much like those of other superheroes around the world. However, the key difference is that I possess a rare ability found in only one superhero in the Marvel X-Men series: the power of the mind.

What I mean by this is best illustrated by the following example. I am sitting here on the beach in Exuma, overlooking the sea, and I notice an elderly tourist swimming out a little too far. As I tighten the laces of my steel-toe boots more securely than usual, I prepare myself mentally. I may need to kick a shark in the mouth if it attempts to attack this tourist. Although I am afraid of sharks, someone must save him and at this moment, I am the only person present wearing steel-toe boots.

In my mind, I visualize the scene unfolding like a high-definition movie: I see myself taking the necessary actions to save the day. Sharks have many sharp teeth, but my steel-toe boots should be capable of knocking a few of them out.

Yet the tourist swims back to shore on his own, and the adventure ends before it begins.

Now, as I gaze at the Three Sisters Rocks, I wonder what other stories they might hold. Could these three rocks actually be the gateway to Atlantis, the lost underwater city?

A few seagulls fly overhead. I wonder what they want; I will not allow them to make me waste my potato chips again. Nevertheless, I still love God’s creatures.

How far could I actually swim out to sea before I might regret it? Which direction leads to Africa, and which to the United States? Am I on the western side of the island? How can I determine the directions I am facing?

It rained today in Exuma, not heavily, but enough to be noticeable. Someone has a flat tire on the road behind me.

Those dishes are going to be stacked up waiting for me when I return to work. I wish I were rich.

The end.

Inside the Mind of Bahama Drama, the Superhero.

Maybe it’s the 3 Kalik beers making up this story. I can’t be too sure 😃 let me go do my dishes 😭

I wonder why nobody on the island talks about the 2 cousins that dove under each of these rocks looking for the remains of the 3 sisters, with one of the cousins said to be sucked into a wormhole under the water the brother said to village people back then, never to be seen again under the middle rock.

I have always been a superhero.

Kemp Road: her rotting finger

Kemp Road: her rotting finger

Good night Bahama Drama, please keep me anonymous. I need to share a true tale dat just happen to a friend of mine from Kemp Road. De old people dem always used to say, never point yuh finger towards a graveyard else it go rotten off. Well, mi friend finger had to get amputate because of de same reason, but de doctor dem say she get a bad infection after it get cut and stuck by a nasty hook when she was fishing. Dem think dat was de main reason, but I know better.

Three weeks ago, we was passing one of dem old cemetery in her car. She extend her right index finger straight towards de graveyard, pointing and talking bout how it look so overgrown. I tell she right away, “Girl, never do dat! Never point yuh finger at de graveyard or it go rotten off!” She laugh it off like it was just old people talk and superstition.

Few days later, she get a small injury fishing—de hook jook dat same finger, draw blood and leave a piece of rusted metal inside. She go get it clean and take antibiotics, but de finger never heal proper. It swell up bad-bad, turn pale then dark with infection. De pain shoot up she hand and nothing de doctor do could stop it. In de end, dem had to amputate to save de rest of she hand from gangrene.

Now, dem doctor talk bout de hook and bacteria, but dose of us who know de old ways shake we head. De timing, de way it progress so relentless in dat exact finger she point with it ain sound like ordinary bad luck. It sound like de spirits of de departed get disturb by she gesture and claim dat finger as retribution. De dead do not forget slights.

Dis kind of ting echo other whisper stories from de Family Islands and de outskirts of Nassau: fingers dat blacken overnight after similar mistake, hands dat tremble with phantom pain near burial ground, and people who, even years later, keep dem hands firm on de wheel or by dem side when passing cemetery, especially in de dim hours when shadows lengthen.

Readers, take dis warning serious. If yuh traveling past a Bahamian graveyard, keep yuh hands to yuh self. Pointing invite a curse dat start subtle a little itch or discoloration but progress with terrifying certainty. De dead claim what belong to dem, and once dem take it, it gone fa true. Sleep with dis knowledge tonight and may yuh nights stay undisturbed. Good night, Bahama Drama.
