Born Out of Secrets
Born Out of Secrets
Good night, Bahama Drama. My name is Jason, and tonight, I just need to let this off my chest because it’s eating me alive.
I grew up not knowing my father. Anytime I’d ask my mom about him, she’d change the subject or tell me he wasn’t worth talking about. Shitd raised me on her own, and I learned early on not to ask too many questions. But now, at 28 years old, I finally know the truth. And it’s worse than I ever could’ve imagined.
Last week, my mom sit me down out of the blue and said, Jason, you need to know who your father is. I wasn’t ready for what came next. She told me my father is the bishop of a well-known church right here in Nassau. A man respected and admired by hundreds of people. A man I’ve seen on TV, in the newspapers, preaching the word of God. And the worst part? She told me I was the result of an affair he had while he was already married.
I felt like the ground opened up under me. She went on to say she used to be one of his sweet hearts when she was younger. She said he promised her things empty promises and when she got pregnant with me, he disappeared. Just like that. She said he made it clear he wasn’t going to risk his reputation for her or me.
Now I’m sitting here trying to figure out how I’m supposed to process this. My father, a so-called man of God, left me to grow up without a dad because I didn’t fit the image of his perfect life. Meanwhile, his kids my half-siblings got to grow up in his house with his love and support, while I was just some dirty little secret.
I thought about going to his church on Sunday, but how do you confront a man like that? Do I even want to? I’m angry, but I’m also just hurt. Hurt that he knew about me all these years and never once reached out. Hurt that I’m out here struggling while he’s living in a mansion preaching about righteousness.
I told my mom I feel like I’m nothing but a mistake. She said, You might’ve been an accident to him, but you were never a mistake to me.
I’m trying to hold on to that. Trying to believe that I still matter, even if my own father couldn’t see it. I don’t know where to go from here, but I know one thing I’m not going to let his choices define me anymore.

Jason, you are NOT a mistake, and your value doesn’t come from any man not even your father. It hurts now, but hold your head high and know that you are stronger than the circumstances you were born into. Your mom is right you were never a mistake. Lean on God for strength, and if you ever choose to confront your father, do it on your own terms, with peace in your heart. You deserve closure, but most of all, you deserve healing. Stay strong.
