13-Year-Old Girl Allegedly Sexually Assaulted by 19-Year-Old Passenger on Cruise Ship in Bahamian Waters

Grand Bahama, Bahamas — Authorities in the Bahamas are investigating an alleged sexual assault involving a 13-year-old American girl aboard a cruise ship approximately 15 nautical miles off the coast of West End, Grand Bahama Island.

According to reports from the Royal Bahamas Police Force, officers from the Celebration Key Police Station were notified around 7:30 a.m. on Sunday, March 29, 2026, following a report from the vessel’s security personnel. The girl’s mother had earlier informed ship officials that her daughter was missing, with the disappearance first noted at approximately 2:17 a.m. on Saturday, March 28.

The minor was located around 3:30 a.m. She subsequently informed police that she had met a male passenger on Deck 9 during the late hours of Friday, March 27. She stated that she accompanied him to his cabin on Deck 2 to charge her phone, where she alleges he inappropriately touched her and sexually assaulted her.

The suspect is described as a 19-year-old American man with a dark complexion, slim build, plaited hairstyle, and tattoos on both forearms. He has been cautioned by police a formal procedural step under Bahamian law while the investigation continues. His identity has not been publicly released.

This incident has drawn renewed attention to safety protocols on cruise ships, particularly regarding the supervision of minors during late-night hours and in less monitored areas of the vessels.

Broader Concerns Within the Cruise Industry

The event is the latest in a series of reported assaults involving minors on cruise ships operating in or near Bahamian waters. In December 2025, a 16-year-old girl was allegedly raped aboard the Carnival Sunrise while the vessel was in Bahamian waters; a 17-year-old male passenger was arrested by local police in connection with that case.

Separately, in February 2026, a 73-year-old man was arrested upon the return of Royal Caribbean’s Explorer of the Seas to Port Canaveral, Florida, after he was accused of inappropriately touching a minor aboard the ship in international waters.

Safety advocates have long highlighted the challenges of addressing criminal incidents at sea, including questions of jurisdiction, timely reporting, and the adequacy of onboard security measures when vulnerable passengers, especially children, are involved.

Cruise Lines’ Responsibility and Expert Recommendations

Cruise operators consistently emphasize their commitment to passenger safety and describe their ships as secure, family-oriented environments. Nevertheless, maritime legal experts and victim advocates argue that enhanced proactive measures such as improved surveillance in public areas, stricter oversight of interactions involving minors, and clearer protocols for alcohol service are necessary to mitigate risks.

Court precedents in the United States have, in certain cases, examined the duty of care owed by cruise lines to their passengers, including the potential obligation to monitor behavior more effectively in order to prevent foreseeable harm.

Ongoing Investigation and Support for Victims

The Royal Bahamas Police Force has indicated that the matter is being treated with the utmost seriousness and that inquiries remain active. Family members of the victim, along with child protection organizations, have called for greater transparency from both cruise operators and authorities, as well as the implementation of stronger preventive protocols across the industry.

Individuals affected by sexual violence are encouraged to report incidents to the appropriate authorities without delay and to seek medical attention and professional support services as soon as possible.
