BAHAMA DRAMA BREAKING: A Family’s Heartbreak Over Bahamian Waters

BAHAMA DRAMA BREAKING: A Family’s Heartbreak Over Bahamian Waters

BY BAHAMA DRAMA STAFF

There are moments when the very waters that bring our islands beauty and peace turn heavy with sorrow.

What was meant to be the joyful conclusion of a Labor Day holiday on Monday, September 7, ended in unspeakable grief when a private Piper PA-34 Seneca went down in the waters off North Andros. Today, Tuesday, September 8, the desperate hope that held family, friends, and islanders together across twenty-four hours of searching gave way to heartbreak: all four souls aboard have been recovered.
Aboard that flight were Mario Lamar, 80—an experienced pilot of over forty years who knew Bahamian skies well—his wife, Lili Lamar, 79, and their two adult grandchildren, Sofia Sosa, 28, and Christian Sosa, 22. Great Harbour Cay in the Berry Islands was not just a vacation stop for them; relatives describe it as their second home, a sanctuary etched with decades of memories, sea breeze, and family laughter.

Shortly after lifting off from Great Harbour Cay on Monday morning, September 7, bound for South Florida, tracking data showed the aircraft encountering rough weather near Red Bays off the western coast of Andros. The plane suddenly lost altitude and disappeared from radar around late morning.

Throughout Monday afternoon and into the night, official rescue teams from the Royal Bahamas Defence Force and the U.S. Coast Guard fought deteriorating weather conditions to locate the crash site.

Driven by love and unwilling to wait by the telephone, relatives deployed private boats across the Gulf Stream from Florida early Tuesday morning, September 8, joining local searchers on the open water. By Tuesday afternoon, those very loved ones helped locate the submerged wreckage and recovered all four family members, ending the agonizing search.

Young Sofia had only just begun pouring her life into caring for fragile newborns as a neonatal physician assistant, while her brother Christian was carving his creative path into the world. To lose grandparents who built a lifetime together alongside two vibrant young souls stepping into their prime is a weight no single family should ever have to bear.

As Bahamians, our seas connect us, but today they hold our collective prayers. We extend our deepest, most tender sympathies to the Lamar and Sosa families, to their loved ones across the water in Florida, and to the community of Great Harbour Cay who welcomed them as their own. May their memories be a blessing, and may peace find those left to mourn them.
