AMERICAN SOLDIERS LEFT BEHIND: The Tragic Shame of the United States

By: Michael Elijah Muhammad Clare

There is a cold, devastating tragedy unfolding across the United States, and it is a systemic failure that should make every single American uncomfortable.

While the United States commands the most powerful, heavily funded military apparatus on the face of the earth, the human beings who wore the uniform are being discarded when the uniform comes off. According to the most recent official data from the Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD), over 32,000 veterans are homeless on any given night.

Think about that. Thirty-two thousand heroes—men and women who survived the jungles of Vietnam, the sands of Iraq, and the mountains of Afghanistan—are now sleeping on concrete, shivering beneath bridges, and begging for scraps on the very streets they swore their lives to protect.

The Anatomy of a Dual Failure:

* The Federal Abandonment: The Department of Veterans Affairs (VA) and Congress pass massive military budgets, yet allow bureaucratic red tape to choke out immediate psychological and housing relief for discharging soldiers.

* The State Legislative Silence: State capitals routinely pass the buck, treating veteran care as a strictly “federal issue” while local police clear out veteran encampments from city parks instead of providing state-funded rehabilitation.

A Systemic Betrayal at Every Level of Government

This is not just a failure of federal policy; it is a shameful stain on the state legislatures. While federal agencies boast about incremental reductions in data charts, thirty-two thousand human beings remain stranded in the open air. The federal government builds the machines of war, but when those machines break the minds and bodies of the soldiers operating them, the states refuse to pick up the pieces.

State legislatures across America routinely pass massive tax breaks and funding for stadium projects while veteran mental health services, specialized drug rehabilitation, and dedicated housing facilities are left underfunded. Governors and local representatives treat the veteran crisis like a political football, pushing the blame back onto Washington while their own citizens freeze on their city sidewalks.

Unlike Anywhere Else in the World
In many nations around the globe, the care of a veteran is a sacred, lifelong covenant.

Countries with a fraction of America’s wealth ensure their former service members are guaranteed housing, healthcare, and a baseline of dignity that prevents them from slipping into the cracks of poverty and substance addiction.

Yet, in the wealthiest nation on earth, the legacy of wars like Vietnam is a visible scar on the pavement. The raw data proves that a shocking percentage of these 32,000 unsheltered souls are battling severe, chronic Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD) and late-stage substance use disorders—direct psychological casualties of combat that went untreated until it was too late.

The American Public Cannot Remain Easy
This article is a plea to the conscience of the American public. You cannot walk past a homeless veteran and feel comfortable. You cannot wave the flag on the Fourth of July while thirty-two thousand troops are left behind in the cold.

Let this be a turning point in history. The demand must be total and absolute: Zero homeless veterans. No excuses from Washington. No deflections from state capitals. A nation that has the power to deploy an army anywhere in the world within twenty-four hours has the power to put a roof over every single soldier’s head.

Anything less is an absolute tragedy.

Anything less is a national shame.
