A New Poet is Born right here in the Bahamas, so let’s embrace him and pray for him.
Dedicated to the Bahamas
By: Mr. Carlton Ezekiel Pinder
Good night Bahama Drama family,
My name is Carlton Ezekiel Pinder, born and raised in Nassau. I studied International Relations at the University because I wanted to help my country on a diplomatic level. But recently, after meeting the girl of my dreams who told me to follow my heart, I have decided to switch my life’s calling and become a full-time poet.
This is my very first poem to be shared on a public stage. I dedicate it to the Bahamas and the Bahamian people, who have supported me in ways I can’t even explain. This poem is called:
“O Bahamas, You Is My Coconut” 🌴🥥
Please read and support. More to come.
Ohh Bahamas, You Is My Coconut
By: Carlton Ezekiel Pinder
Bahamas,
You is my coconut,
Round and brown,
Sometimes hairy like my uncle back in Fox Hill,
But always full of juice.
I sip you with my soul,
And sometimes a straw.
You taste like sunburn and sky juice mix together,
With a side order of cracked conch sadness.
Oh Nassau traffic!
Oh broken stoplights!
You teach me patience,
Even though I honk my horn with rage like a conch shell blowing at Junkanoo.
Exuma water,
You so blue it make me cry,
But when I try to rhyme something with “Exuma,”
The only thing I think of is “Tuna.”
So I call you Exuma Tuna.
Forgive me,
I am new to this art.
Bahamas,
Land of 700 islands,
I only been to 3.
But still,
I write like I know all 700 personally,
Like cousins at a wedding waiting for buffet.
Girl of my dreams,
She inspire me to rhyme “Bahamas” with “Pajamas.”
So here it is:
Bahamas in pajamas,
Dancing on the beach in dramas,
Eating guava duff with llamas.
Yes. I said llamas.
Don’t question me,
It is art.
Bahamas,
You is my coconut.
If you fall from the tree on my head,
I would not sue.
I would only say thank you,
For knocking sense into me.
Thank you to everyone who reads this poem. I know it is only the beginning of my poetic journey. Please keep supporting me as I carry the Bahamas name to the world stage through my writing.
Much love,
Carlton Ezekiel Pinder ✍🏾
