In the Bahamas, as a child, our telephone number had 5 digits and later in the 90’s changed to 7 digits. Our clothes came from Christine & Johnny, Jack &Jill, The House of Sales.Our Clarke’s shoes came from G.R.Sweeting . Our, hand me downs were homemade or from your siblings. We changed from school clothes to play clothes and slippers. School was mandatory and we walked to school. There was no taking or picking you up in the car 🤣🤔 lol! We rode a bus for a fare of 50 cents, no seat belts. Our teachers were people who you could TRUST and respect. We did homework before being allowed outside to play.
We ate dinner at the family table and ate whatever our parents prepared, with no exceptions. Eating at a restaurant was a luxury for special occasions. KFC or Burger King was always a treat. Fast food was bologna or pb&j sandwiches to take outside. The ice cream truck was a treat on a hot day.
Our phone hung on the wall in the living room and had a cord, no private conversation or cell phones. We had to actually get up to change the channel and turn the antenna outside to get better reception. No cable just four stations plus ZNS.
We played Mother May I, Hopscotch, Cowboys and Indians, Cops and Robbers, 1,2,3 Not It, Red Light Green Light, Red Rover, Hide & Seek, Truth or Dare, Tag, Baseball, 4 square, Kick Ball, skated, skateboarded and rode bikes.
Girls played Dollie house. Boys played football in the yard. We played board games, not video games. Boys also played baseball or softball at the local park every summer and swam at Long Wharf Beach or South Beach Pool.. Very few had pools at home.
Staying in the house was a punishment and the only thing we knew about “bored”— “You better find something to do before I find it for you!”
There was no bottled water; we drank from the tap or the water from the Government Pump.
We watched cartoons on Saturday mornings, went to our friend’s homes and played roundence, hopscotch, and porking in the street.
We weren’t afraid of anything. If someone had a fight, that’s what it was and we were friends again a week later, if not SOONER. It wasn’t all police business. When dusk came, it was our curfew.
We watched our MOUTHS around our elders because ALL of our Aunts, Uncles, Grandpas and Grandmas AND our Parents best friends were also our PARENTS (they COULD & WOULD WHOOP Y’ALL!,) and you didn’t want them telling your PARENTS if you misbehaved.
These were the good ole days. Kids today will never know how it feels to be a real kid. I loved my childhood…!!!
