Behind the Silence

Behind the Silence

Sometimes I sit in silence and wonder if people really see me. Not just the person I show every day but the one behind the quiet moments.

The one who thinks too much before speaking. The one who walks into a room and feels every energy before taking a seat. People think they know but they don’t. Not really.

Some days I’m the strongest person in the room. Other days I’m just trying to hold myself together. But one thing about me. I always notice. I notice who smiles with their eyes and who just moves their lips.

I notice who asks how I’m doing and waits for an answer. And who asks just to ask. Life is funny like that. We all wear masks but some people’s masks are painted better than others. Anyway.

Today feels like one of those days where I’m watching more than I’m speaking. Just observing. Just existing. If you get it. You get it.

Gang violence pushes Trinidad and Tobago far enough government…

Gang violence pushes Trinidad and Tobago far enough government officials say

Gang Violence pushes Trinidad and Tobago declared a nationwide state of emergency on December 30, 2024, in response to a significant surge in gang-related violence, Instead of sitting on their hands or twiddling their fingers Trinidad in Tobago government are taking drastic actions!

This decision followed a particularly violent weekend during which six individuals were killed in gang-related incidents, including five men in a suspected reprisal shooting near Port of Spain.

The state of emergency grants law enforcement enhanced powers, such as conducting searches without warrants and detaining suspects for up to 48 hours without charges, with possible extensions granted by a court. These measures aim to address the escalating violence, which has led to a record 623 homicides in 2024, predominantly linked to organized crime and gang activities.

Authorities have noted that a significant portion of illegal firearms used in these crimes are sourced from the United States, contributing to the rising violence. The government has emphasized that while the state of emergency is in effect, there are no current plans to impose curfews or restrict public gatherings, allowing schools, businesses, and New Year’s celebrations to proceed as planned.

This is not the first time Trinidad and Tobago has implemented a state of emergency to combat crime; similar measures were taken in 2011 and 2021. The current state of emergency reflects the government’s commitment to addressing the severe threat posed by gang violence and ensuring public safety.
